An ode to George Nakashima and all things beautiful.

George Nakashima was a was a Japanese-American furniture designer, craftsman, and architect who showcased the beauty of American Walnut. He left a lasting impression on modern design aesthetics and on myself –– I still vividly remember the first time I sat in a George Nakashima chair in April 2022 (Conoid Chair, American black walnut with hickory spindles at The Met in New York City).

I designed an interior as an homage to Nakashima and my favorite creators: Isamu Noguchi, Charles and Ray Eames, Willem de Kooning, Park Dae Sung, and more. This home is a snapshot of my aesthetic interests and taste at the time of its creation.

The painting in the back is by contemporary Korean artist Park Dae Sung, who I had the pleasure of meeting through my work with the Hood Museum of Art (writing wall plaques and articles about his work). It's one of my favorites, part of his Archaic Beauty series.

The layout of this room was inspired by George Nakashima's own home and workspace in New Hope.

A meditation on the Conoid Chair that started my love for George Nakashima's work. It took ~8 hours to 3D model the chair. In the background you can see some of my favorite art and design pieces: The Akari 10A Lamp by Isamu Noguchi. Traditional Japanese Kintsugi dishware. The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman by Herman Miller. A Willem de Kooning Women painting.
